The Old Red Rocking Chair
Lesson Plan Extensions
The following are some good lesson plans to implement while reading The Old Red Rocking Chair:
Concept: reuse
- Create a class or school Swap Box with items in good condition that each child is done using (e.g. clothes, toys, school supplies). Let others in the class reuse the items or donate them to a community donation drive, reuse center or thrift store.
- Have each student bring in an old item that was going to be thrown away and use it to create a new item. Items can be used collectively or individually.
- Bring an item to class like a glass jar or a plastic plate. Have the class sit in a circle, and as the item is passed around, have each student tell one new (re)use for the item. Then have them write a story about the different uses the item goes through.
- Have students write a story about an item in their house that was a hand-me-down or reused item.
- Discuss how reusing items conserved resources and energy. Historically, explore as a class how items were reused and recycled, especially during the 1940’s during WW II.
- Find out if there are any reuse centers in your community that can help with classroom materials (e.g. factory discards that can be used for math counters, art supplies, etc.).
