Johnny Appleseed: A Tall Tale
Lesson Plan Extensions
The following are some good lesson plans to implement while reading Johnny Appleseed: A Tall Tale:
Concepts: living with nature, farming, frontier/pioneer life, tall tales/myths
- Have a Forester come and talk to the class about their job and about how they manage a tree farm. Have them discuss the difference between clear cutting and selective cutting. Have them discuss all of the different products that come from trees from paper to pine cleaner and lots of stuff you never thought about in between!
- Find out if your city is a Tree City USA (see link below). Look into what steps your class can take to help reforest an area or help improve the native plant cover in your community.
- Plant a native tree in your schoolyard and chart its growth over the years.
- Have a local Historian come to your class and tell about frontier/pioneer life in the area, or gather books on the history of the area in which you live and explore them as a class. Compare what your day may have looked like then and now from what types of games you would play to what type of work you would do and what types of foods you would eat.
- Have the class buddy up, and write a fun tall tale about one of your partner’s strengths.
