A Pig’s Tale
Lesson Plan Extensions
The following are some good lesson plans to implement while reading A Pig’s Tale:
Concepts: collecting/saving resources, reuse, recycle, landfills vs. dumps
- Discuss as a class what types of things you collect (i.e. string, pogs, matchbox cars, rocks, etc.). How many of these items can be used for something or used in another way?
- Find out what you can recycle in your community (use the Earth 911 locator at the top of this page), and discuss how recycling saves resources (e.g. recycling an aluminum can is 98% more energy efficient that making a new one). As a class explore how aluminum is made from Bauxite and how mining this material can harm the environment.
- Arrange for a guest speaker to visit from the local or regional landfill or visit a local/regional landfill and learn about the difference between a dump and a sanitary lined landfill.
- Create a class or school Swap Box with items in good condition that each child is done using (e.g. clothes, toys, school supplies). Let others in the class reuse the items or donate them to a community donation drive, reuse center or thrift store
- Write your own rhyming story about an aspect of the environment that is important to you.
