Smurfit-Stone, Advanced Disposal Partner To Help Florida Meet Recycling Goals

Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, in partnership with Advanced Disposal Services, Inc., opened a new materials recycling facility in Jacksonville to help the state of Florida reach its new recycling goals.

The city is now equipped with two Smurfit-Stone recycling facilities. Their combined capabilities will assist the state in meeting its goal to reach a 75 percent recycling rate by 2020.

“Recycling is both a business opportunity and an integral part of our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” said Mike Oswald, senior vice president of Smurfit-Stone’s recycling division. “We all benefit when we recycle. By diverting materials from landfills and conserving landfill space, we avoid wasting valuable materials and conserve our natural resources.”

Smurfit-Stone has one of the world’s largest paper reclamation businesses, and handled about 6.8 million tons of recovered paper in 2007. The company is expanding its recycling capabilities to include plastics, metals and glass. Already, operations are recovering more than 7 million tons annually of valuable recyclables.

In addition to the bolstered recycling effort, Smurfit-Stone and Advanced Disposal Services will contribute 5,000 seedlings for use by Jacksonville in its beautification and sustainability programs.
