Seattle Recycles More Commercial Food Waste

The amount of commercial organic waste composted monthly in Seattle has increased from about 500 tons to nearly 1,800 tons over the past few years, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

More than 800 businesses are participating in organic waste programs, which accept food scraps, paper plates, cardboard and coffee filters. The roster includes the Space Needle, Woodland Park Zoo, the Mariners, Adobe, RealNetworks, QFC and various restaurants.

The Space Needle’s program has helped the site reduce its trash footprint by 53 percent in just six months. In addition to composting, the Space Needle has switched to more energy-efficient lighting, ceased to offer bottled water at SkyCity restaurant and started recycling frying oil for biodiesel.
