Colorado Man Builds House of Tires
Jon Hager of Grand County, Colo., is putting the finishing touches on his new home. The 2,000 square foot home took two years to build and is completely made of tires.
17,000 tires, which were headed for the landfill, were used to create over 170, 5-foot wide bales that were stacked like bricks to make the home’s frame. Combined with the solar-passive windows that comprise the south wall of the home, Hager stands to save a great deal of money on heating this winter, because the rubber in the tires holds heat during the day.
“Our neighbors around here spend $400, $500, $600 a month on heating bills. We’re hoping to be $50 to $100 dollars a month,” he said.
Hager aims for the inside of the home to be finished by October, so that students from the Colorado School of Mines can study the home’s energy efficiency during the winter months ahead.
