Fayetteville Recycling Program Named Best in AR

A recent survey shows that Fayetteville’s recycling program brings in more materials than any other city in Arkansas, reports The Morning News.

Fifty-six percent of single-family homes participate in the program, totaling in about 587 pounds of recyclables collected each year.

After selling off recycled beer bottles, newspapers and other items, the program cost each home about $2.40 last year. If recyclable materials had not been sold, the cost would have been $5.89 per home, or $1,329,756 total.

The information comes from a recent survey done by R.W. Beck Inc., a Seattle-based infrastructure consultant. The survey is the first portion of a three-phase study, one of which has been completed. The next two phases of the study will explore how to address recycling in commercial establishments like offices and restaurants, as well as how to capture the complicated demographic of apartment dwellers.

Brian Pugh, the Fayettville waste reduction coordinator, said the study is being conducted with aims to improve the city’s program.
