EPA Creates Committee to Address Marine Debris

The U.S. EPA has partnered with 10 other federal agencies to release an interagency report focused on preventing and reducing marine debris as part of President Bush’s Ocean Action Plan.

The group has been dubbed the Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee (IMDCC), and is looking to address the abundance of tires and fishing gear that is found in the ocean and along the coasts.

One of the major causes of marine debris is lack of recycling, as plastic bags and bottles are light enough to be blown out of landfills into water. Use Earth911 to find out where to recycle plastic bags and bottles.

Check out eight more ways to green your beach trip, and use Earth911’s sister site Beaches911 to check if your local beach is closed.
