More And More States Practice Shingle-cycling

An increasing number of companies throughout the U.S. are profiting from shingle recycling, reports The Grand Rapids Press.

At least half the states in the U.S. have shingle-cycling companies. Shingles are made of asphalt and aggregate, and can be reused in making roads and parking lots.

Reusing saves petroleum. An average house of 2,000 square feet with two layers of roofing will have about five tons of recyclable shingles on it. Using the shingles from that one house will save about 10 barrels of new oil from being added into an asphalt mix.

Increased oil prices are motivating more and more states to recycle shingles, according to William Turley, executive director of the Illinois-based Construction Materials Recycling Association.
