CFL Mercury Content Capped
by Ashley Schiller on July 11th, 2008
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published a new standard limiting the mercury content in CFLs.
The standard came as a result from discussions with representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Participating manufacturers will limit the total mercury content in CFLs that use less than 25 watts of electricity to five milligrams per unit. CFLs of 25 to 40 watts will have total mercury content capped at six milligrams per unit.
The voluntary commitment program is open to all CFL manufacturers, not just NEMA members.
