Colorado Ski Towns Compete To Reduce Use of Disposable Plastic Bags

Two Colorado ski towns, Telluride and Aspen, are competing in reusable bag sales in an effort to reduce the use of disposable plastic bags in grocery stores, reports the GJ Sentinel.

Local grocery stores will pay 5 cents per reusable bag sold to help fund renewable energy projects in each town. The competition winner will be determined by which town raises more money per capita.

The winner will donate two $500 solar monitor sets to the other town’s school system.

Since Memorial Day, when the contest began, Clark’s Market in Telluride has seen a 25 percent increase in the use of reusable bags. The competition will end on Labor Day. Officials hope the idea will spread to other Colorado ski towns.
