New Milk Jug Design Aims to Help Environment
Wal-mart and Costco have changed the design of the gallon milk jug. The new containers are cheaper to ship and better for the environment, the milk is fresher when it arrives in stores, and the consumer pays less, according to the New York Times.
The new jugs have changed shipping procedures. Traditional jugs must be shipped in heavy crates, which take up space and require frequent washing. The new jugs are stacked by a machine, with cardboard sheets between layers. More of the boxy jugs can be shipped at a time, reducing the number of trips from the dairy to the store. Superior Dairy reports that the new shipping style has cut labor by half and water use by 60 to 70 percent.
The jugs are currently used in 189 Sam’s Clubs throughout the country. They will soon be stocked in more Sam’s Club stores and perhaps in Wal-Marts as well.
Consumers have had mixed reactions to the new design.
