Allied Waste and RecycleBank Partner to Promote Nationwide Recycling

A new partnership between Allied Waste, the second largest waste management company in the U.S., and RecycleBank, a company that rewards recycling participation with gift cards, aims to provide nationwide access to RecycleBank’s program by the end of 2009.

RecycleBank has been discussing national expansion since 2007, as the program is currently available in nine Northeast and Midwest states. The new partnership will begin in three test markets: Dallas/Ft. Worth, Los Angeles and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

In each new community, Allied Waste trucks will continue to collect recyclables at the curb. But each recycling cart will have a radio frequency identification (RFID) that will record the weight of recyclables, with households earning points based on this weight. Points can be redeemed at RecycleBank’s site for gift cards from participating retailers, such as Bed Bath & Beyond, IKEA and Whole Foods.

You can find a curbside recycling option in your area using Earth 911.
