Faced with Overflowing Landfills, Vancouver Contemplates Zero Waste

Faced with having its largest landfill scheduled to reach capacity by 2010, Vancouver, British Columbia has begun aggressively looking at programs to arrive at a zero waste economy.
Since finding new landfill space is nearly impossible, the City’s zero waste strategy encompasses a lot of programs, from ramping up consumer compliance to lessons for citizens in composting.
British Columbia also has an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR, also known as product stewardship or producer take-back) program, which sets a global example of public-private collaboration in this area. Its plan covers a rapidly growing list of products (the goal is to add two new product categories every three years), and has seen impressive success in getting producers to cover the costs.
