New San Diego Law Requires Construction Recycling
A San Diego law requiring that construction and demolition debris is recycled goes into effect today, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The law mandates developers and do-it-yourself builders to pay a deposit that will be returned after proving that at least 50 percent of their debris has been recycled, reused or donated. Deposits range from $200 for small projects, to $200,000 or more for larger ones.
At least two major waste companies are preparing to build facilities in the county to handle the expected increase of materials.
Officials hope the law will help extend the life of the Miramar Landfill, where about 400,000 tons of construction materials such as concrete and wood have been thrown away annually in past years.
