Cruising through town in a sleek $25,000 hybrid vehicle would make almost anyone look and feel good, but that’s not a reasonable option for all individuals and families. However, there are dozens of simple ways to reduce the environmental impact of your driving and save money at the gas pump.
It’s Not the Indy 500
- Don’t shoot off the line
- Avoid rapid speed-ups and stops
- Maintain a steady speed
- Keep engine speeds between 1,200-3,000 RPM
- Upshift between 2,000-2,500 RPM
- Watch ahead for red lights and slow down in advance
- Drive in higher gears as much as possible-decreased RPM means better gas mileage and reduces engine wear
- Avoid idling and revving the engine
Plan Ahead
- Plan out the shortest route
- Combine trips
- Get directions
- Call ahead to places like the video store to make sure the wanted item is available
- Carpool or use public transportation
- Refuel early or late in the day during hot weather in order to decrease evaporation
- Keep car light-dejunk the trunk
- Avoid rush-hour traffic (plan to avoid or leave a little early)
Stay Tuned
- Change oil and oil filter regularly
- Check spark plugs, oxygen sensors, hoses, belts and air filters
- Keep tires properly inflated and aligned
- Take advantage of equipment like cruise control and overdrive transmissions
- Purchase low-rolling resistance tires
