Saving Money with Shingles Recycling

Instead of adding to the pile at the landfill, old shingles will be recycled into paving asphalt for roads in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, reports the Post Crescent.

The program will help save space in the landfill. County Solid waste director Phil Stecker said he expects 3,000 to 5,000 tons of shingles in be diverted from the landfill in the first year.

Recycling will also save the county money. The shingles can replace three to five percent of the oil that typically goes into asphalt hot mix.

Two other counties in Wisconsin, Dane and La Crosse, also recycle shingles. According to the article, Dane County recycles about 15,000 tons a year, which saves about 30,000 cubic yards of landfill space.
