Anchorage Doubles Curbside Recycling
Nearly double the number of homes in Anchorage, Alaska will soon have curbside recycling available. The city’s biggest trash hauler, Alaska Waste, will offer the program to 35,000 of its 44,000 customers, reports the Anchorage Daily News.
Participants will be able to recycle cardboard, mixed paper, recyclable plastics, tin and aluminum. The cost is six dollars a month. Trash pickup prices may go down as residents increase recycling rates.
There has been increasing pressure to implement recycling programs in the city, according to the article. Critics say Anchorage is the largest U.S. city without a recycling program.
Before the expansion, about 3,800 of the 18,000 Alaska Waste customers who were eligible for curbside recycling signed up for it.
Bins will be distributed in July. Interested residents may sign up at www.alaskawaste.net.
