Florida University To Use Solar Power
by Ashley Schiller on May 21st, 2008
Lawmakers granted $8.5 million to Florida Gulf Coast University for solar panels that will produce sufficient energy to meet all the university’s needs, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The FGCU solar field is predicted to save the university $22 million over 30 years. It will be one of the largest solar fields for a university in the world.
The grant awaits approval from Gov. Charlie Crist, but the Palm Beach Post predicts he will pass the plan, “being a fan himself of solar energy.”
Details about the solar panels are still being decided, such as the size and whether or not they will rotate with the sun. The rows will cover a 16-acre area.
