Keep America Beautiful Challenges Volunteers to “Fight Dirty”

Keep an eye out for Keep America Beautiful’s (KAB) annual Great American Cleanup campaign, which is coming to a city near you starting this Saturday, March 1.
The theme of this year’s event with by “fight dirty” to tie in with the 2008 Presidential debate, and KAB aims to clean up over 17,000 communities across the country with the help of nearly three million volunteers. The campaign will last through May 31.
This year’s highlights include:
- A Golden State kickoff in California on March 4 that will include recycling drives and removal of illegal dump sites
- A third consecutive visit to Missisippi on March 11 to continue removing debris from Hurricane Katrina
- A Washington, D.C. kickoff on April 5 as part of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival that will clean up the Anacostia River
- An Earth Day (April 22) kickoff in New York City to clean up the City’s five boroughs
Overall, KAB is expecting 30,000 community improvement activities and educational workshops. In 2007, the Great American Cleanup resulted in 200 million pounds of litter and debris removed from America’s landscape. This included the collection of 22.4 million pounds of aluminum and steel, 592,000 pounds of wireless phones and related equipment and over 70 million PET bottles for recycling.
