Tips for a Green Valentine’s Day
by Earth 911 on February 12th, 2008
With just a few days left until St. Valentine’s Day, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is offering a few tips to reduce the amount of waste generated this year.
- One traditional gift is flowers, but these have a short lifecycle. After they dry up, an alternative to disposal is to put them in a compost bin. You can also buy fresh flowers, trees or shrubs that can be replanted in your yard.
- Another option is gifts made from recycled materials, such as fleece jackets made from plastic bottles and kitchen tools/house décor made from recycled plastic and glass.
- Additionally, homemade gifts such as cookies or candy will reduce packaging. These can be placed in a reusable or recycled container. Homemade greeting cards will promote reuse, and can be easily recycled with your paper.
With a little imagination and thoughtful planning, everyone can celebrate a “Green” Valentine’s Day.
