The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Washoe County is developing a plan to provide recycling bins for residents to drop off used compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs).

While CFLs are more energy-efficient and last longer than incandescent bulbs, they contain traces of mercury and should be properly recycled instead of thrown in the trash.

There is currently not a facility in Reno for recycling CFLs, meaning they may be trucked to Las Vegas with refrigerators that are being recycled. From there, they would be sent to a bulb recycler in Phoenix.

There is still no decision on where bins will be placed or when they will be available. If you want to recycle CFLs in your neighborhood, use Earth 911’s recycling locator.
