State’s Restaurants Don’t Recycle Shells

Annapolis’ The Capital reports that Maryland is hoping to recover 10,000 oyster shells a year through a restaurant shell recycling program that would be used to rebuild oyster reefs.

Maryland currently has no policy of shell recycling in restaurants, but the Oyster Recovery Partnership is trying to get one instituted by next winter.

The University of Maryland oyster hatchery would take in the recycled shells, which would be used to breed new oysters and line oyster reefs that have been depleted by disease and water pollution.

The program would ideally operate during the winter, when oyster consumption is at his peak.
