L.A. Plastic Bag Ban Unravels

Environmental Leader features an update on the attempt of Los Angeles to ban plastic bags in supermarkets, as the city has adopted a retail-based reuse program instead of an all-out ban.
Under the new plan, store owners will encourage customers to reuse shopping bags instead of choose plastic for their groceries.
LA supervisors have said that if plastic bag use is not reduced by 30 percent prior to 2010, they will revisit a bag ban plan. San Francisco banned plastic bags in 2007 over fears that the city’s six million bags harm marine life.
Other cities have developed in-store recycling efforts, such as New York and Phoenix. These programs allow plastic bags to still be distributed, but consumers can return the bags to stores.
