Vermont Misses Recycling Goal by a Mile
The Burlington Free Press presents a story evaluating the state’s goal of recycling half of its solid waste, a rate proposed in 2001 that currently sits at 30 percent.
Vermont’s solid waste officials want to consider mandatory recycling and incentives for recycling as a way to increase participation. Part of the issue is that certain counties have more facilities than others, so some counties are above 60 percent but others are well below that rate.
Another solution proposed in the article is product stewardship, where manufacturers and retailers would take more responsibility for the disposal of their products.
