Rhode Island Businesses Alerted: It’s Time to Recycle
by Earth 911 on January 18th, 2008
The Providence Journal features news that the city sent 2,300 letters this week stressing to businesses that recycling participation is “abysmal” and needs to be improved.
The main reason for the urgency to recycle is that the state’s Central landfill should only have room for two more years of waste, and it would cost $70 million to expand it.
The article estimates that 60 percent of landfill waste is from businesses, which amounts to 700,000 tons per year. It is also estimated that business recycling participation in Rhode Island is just three percent.
The city will begin enforcing mandatory recycling in February 2009. At least one Rhode Island town has taken a strong approach to increase recycling among residents: those who don’t recycle won’t get trash picked up.
