Austin Hopes To Go Zero Waste By 2040
by Earth 911 on January 4th, 2008
Environmental Leader reports that Austin, Texas is aiming to reduce its trash output by 20 percent by 2012, eventually reaching zero waste by the year 2040.
This will be accomplished through recycling and composting, as well as offering incentives and penalties to encourage reuse of products and packaging. It is just the latest plan for Austin to reduce its footprint, which previously featured a climate protection plan and the opening of a green bank.
Austin currently has a recycling rate around 30 percent, and is developing a single-stream recycling program within the next year. San Francisco and its surrounding cities have been discussing the idea of zero waste since as early as 2002.
