Fashion Forward, and Back
by Meryl Klein on January 1st, 2008
There’s a song by Peter Allen, Everything Old Is New Again, and when it comes to reuse, this title can say it all. One of the best examples of this saying is in the fashion world, where certain designs and fabrics go in and out of style frequently. Therefore, it’s only fitting that fashion lends itself perfectly for the concept of reuse.
Reuse and fashion go hand in hand. Vintage clothing is quite cool—it not only makes a statement, but it helps reduce your carbon footprint and do something good for the environment.
Fashion borrows from the past and builds into the future. You can find elements of great original styles from the 1920’s through 1990’s in current styles AND at your local thrift stores that can be worn as is or mixed and matched with today’s contemporary styles.
Each time you reuse clothing in this way, you not only reduce the need for more to be created, sewn and shipped to your town, but you can make a statement for yourself and the environment.
Have more fun with vintage clothing. Try creating a fashion show for your class, school or community. Learn with your friends about what was going on in history when each decade from the past was in full swing, and make a multimedia PowerPoint presentation with old photos and music to background your catwalk.
Be sure to include some reuse/recycling designs and accessories of your own. Any funds you make from the show can be used to start a Club Earth 911.
Fashion is a high-powered industry, and who knows, your reuse efforts could launch you into your future career with a good eye to the past and future.
