Thompson Pushing Mandatory Bottle Return Bill
The Frederick News-Post reports that Frederick County Commissioner John L. Thompson Jr. is attempting to develop a mandatory bottle recycling program for county retailers to increase recycling participation.
The bill would require consumers to pay an additional tax when purchasing drinks, probably five cents per container. This money would then be refunded when the consumer brings the container back to the store.
This is not the first time Thompson has attempted to pass a bottle bill in Frederick County. He has been suggesting some form of it for almost seven years. Maryland is currently not one of the 11 states that has implemented a bottle bill law statewide.
