NY Times Square Ball “Goes Green”

BBC News reports that this evening’s ball drop in New York’s Times Square will be using energy-efficient LED lights in celebration of the ball’s 100th year.

The LED lights will also make the ball about twice as bright as previous years. This year’s ball will have 9,576 lights in all, using enough electricity to power 10 toasters.

New York already has a precedent for greening the holidays, as this year’s Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was equipped with 30,000 LED lights.
