Canadian Community Promotes Bulbs for Bears
Ecotour company Natural Habitat Adventures has developed a new program in Churchill, Manitoba called “Bulbs-for-Bears,” which will provide compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) to the 1,000-resident community in order to promote energy efficiency.
The bulbs will be provided with the help of corporate sponsor Gaiam, and will save more than $150,000 in energy costs over their lifetime. They will also come with a bulb crusher, which will allow for proper disposal of the bulbs. CFLs contain mercury, which can contaminate soil and water if the bulbs are disposed of improperly.
To find out how to recycle CFLs in your area, use the Earth 911 recycling locator search at the top of this page. For more on energy efficiency, visit Earth 911’s Energy page.
