Gotham’s Christmas Tree Gets Greener

CNET News.com features word that this year’s Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center will be conserving energy through the use of 30,000 LED lights powered by solar panels.

Rockefeller Center already has 365 General Electric solar panels installed that are capable of generating 70 kilowatts of energy. The new bulb system will save the electricity used in a whole month by a 2,000 square-foot single family
home.

In addition to lighting, the tree itself was cut down by handsaw this year and will be donated to Habitat for Humanity after the Holidays for lumber. For more information on how to green your holiday season, visit Earth 911’s Green Your Holidays section.
