For an Eco-Safe Celebration

The Hindu reminds those looking to celebrate Deepavali (also known as Diwali, for fans of The Office) to practice the five R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Refuse.

Deepavali is the Festival of Lights in India, and thus it results in lots of fireworks displays and light displays on houses. This article suggests continuing the old tradition of lighting oil lamps, because the environmental strain will not be as significant.

Another environmental aspect mentioned is the result of increased shopping, as garbage disposal is already an issue in the country and the addition of more non-recyclable waste becomes a factor.
