NYC Eyes Store Recycle Requirement

BusinessWeek reports that New York’s City Council has introduced legislation that would require any store occupying 5,000 or more square feet and distributing plastic bags to establish an in-store recycling program so these bags won’t end up in landfills or waterways.

In addition, all of these bags would be required to promote the recycling program in three-inch high letters, with fines for the possible 700 grocery stores the bill would apply to. This follows the lead of cities like San Francisco and Oakland, which have banned plastic bags from being distributed in stores.
