It was on this day in 1972 that Congress passed the Clean Water Act to restore and protect water resources in the United States by preventing the discharge of pollutants into U.S. waterways.

Now, 170 members of Congress have signed on for a Clean Water Restoration Act, stating that treatment plants continue to violate the law.

October 18 was also the original celebration date for World Water Monitoring Day across the U.S., but this was changed in 2007 to September 18 in hopes of warmer weather. For more information on water pollution, check out Earth 911’s Water page.
