Pizza Boxes Banned From Barrington Recycle Bins
by Earth 911 on September 25th, 2007
EastBayRI.com features an announcement from Barrington, R.I.’s Department of Public Works, which tells residents that pizza boxes do not belong in recycle bins because of contaminants in the box fiber.
This is actually not a new phenomenon, as pizza boxes have been taken by the county for years but not necessarily recycled. Upon further investigation, the “contaminant” is actually remains from the pizza (e.g. grease or sauce).
One alternative solution is to use pizza boxes with grease on them in a compost pile. For more information on composting, visit Earth 911’s Composting page.
