Colleges Pitching in to Recycle Waste on Area Campuses
The Spartanburg Herald-Journal profiles recycling efforts by colleges in South Carolina, which receive grants from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to build new recycling programs or improve existing ones.
The DHEC gave over $77,000 in grants to eight South Carolina colleges this year, and at schools like Spartanburg Community College that money resulted in blue recycling bins and recycling of items as varied as paper, aluminum cans and yard waste.
South Carolina colleges are also developing recycling clubs, which use recycling as a fundraiser by collecting money for aluminum from cans. Recycling is invading dorm life as bins are showing up on individual floors.
