Program Aims to Recycle Tons of e-Waste

The Great Falls Tribune reports on an e-waste recycling event this weekend with a special twist: the event is being sponsored by local companies to reduce the recycling fees by as much as 75%.
The goal of the event is to recycle eight tons of e-waste which will then be shipped to Cheyenne, Wyoming to be dismantled. This event is specifically designed for electronics that no longer work, as the city already takes in electronics year-round that still function.
“Marty Basta of the Great Falls Public Works Department said he hopes the e-waste recycling event will become an annual event for the city, which is underwriting the event along with Benefis Healthcare, Great Falls Clinic, College of Technology, Great Falls Public Schools, Malmstrom Air Force Base, and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, plus a number of other local business sponsors.”
One of the most frequent comments we receive at Earth 911 is that because recycling is good for the environment, it shouldn’t ever cost money. The reality is that these disposal services ultimately cost money for the communities/retailers that put them on, so any ways to reduce these fees and increase recycling participation is a win-win for everyone.
