Reklaim Raises $7 Million to Recycle Old Tires
by Earth 911 on August 31st, 2007
The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that Reklaim Technologies in Bellevue has received $7 million from Goldman-Sachs to help develop its process for recycling tires. Reklaim is looking to open a $50 million tire recycling plant in north-central Oregon next year.
The article says that 300 million tires are thrown away each year, and the solution right now is to put them in landfills. Reklaim has a strategy for converting the tires into useful materials.
“Reklaim plans to use a patent-pending technique called sublimation in which tires are shredded, heated to 850 degrees Fahrenheit in an oxygen-free environment and then broken down into oil, carbon black and steel.”
Reklaim illustrates its entire tire recycling solution on its website. Other options for non-landfill use of old tires include using them as compost containers and tire swings. For more information on disposal of car parts, visit Earth 911’s Automotive page.
