Wirefly Launches Trade In Program to Get Consumers to Recycle Wireless Devices
by Earth 911 on August 29th, 2007
TMC.net features a new program by Wirefly to allow consumers to trade in their cellular phones for the purpose to recycling them. Wirefly will give consumers cash for their phones, which can also be donated to one of nine charities.
The program is offering significant cash for trade-ins on certain models, including $59 for the Palm Treo 650, $73 for the Motorola KRZR and $75 the LG Chocolate. The trade-in value is contingent upon consumers buying a new phone from Wirefly.org.
The trade-in value can be instantly donated to charities ranging from the Red Cross to the ASPCA. Ironically, the only charity that directly ties into the environment for this program promoting environment-friendly cell phone disposal is the Sierra Club.
“Wirefly does not actually handle the collection and recycling of the used cell phones and does not buy back used cell phones for the purpose of resale in any way. The goal of the program, therefore, is really to educate consumers about where they can take their cell phones to have them recycled and also to provide an incentive to get them to do this.”
Flipswap is the partner who handles the phone trade-ins by mail. For those looking for a way to recycle their cell phone in person, use Earth 911’s recycling locator box at the top of this page to find an authorized recycler in your area.

I used wirefly’s recycling program, but it isnt tied into purchasing a cell phone from them. The trade in value does not have anything to do with purchasing a phone. You can’t even purchase a phone from the site. I was given the option to get my cash back but had it donated to the lance armstrong foundation. I received a receipt from Lance Armstrong Foundation thanking me for a donation through wirefly…
Very nice and easy way to give back and go green, I think…
