Cape Town Residents Urged to Recycle Waste
AllAfrica.com reports on the attempts of the city of Cape Town, South Africa to encourage residents to recycle. The city started with five neighborhoods, Helderberg, Delft and Mfuleni, Brown’s Farm, Philippi, and the southern suburbs, and is estimating that 50 percent of the 116,000 households are actively recycling.
Councillor Clive Justus, Chairperson of the Utility Services Portfolio Committee, says that in addition to reducing greenhouse gases and city waste, the recycling initiative has an additional motive. Cape Town is fast running out of landfill space, and the city is exploring ways to recycle more products, including tires and organic material.
South Africa as a whole has set a goal of reducing the amount of plastics, cans, paper, glass and tires in landfills by 70% before 2022. It also intends to have plans in place to decrease and treat the remaining 30% of waste.
