Finding an Organic Cheese

National Geographic’s The Green Guide features a report this month on the difficult search for organic cheese. Consumers looking for an organic lifestyle may scramble for an organic cheddar, simply to find that it doesn’t exist.

The article says that just because you can’t find the word “organic” in packaging doesn’t mean that a cheese is filled with hormones and pesticides.

“Find worry-free—and local—cheeses at farmers’ markets and at shops with obsessive staff members whom you can ask specific questions about antibiotics, hormones and feed. And let go of the idea that only certified organic equals pure; organic certification can be prohibitively expensive.”

The article says to be hesitant about assuming that cheeses from Europe are more inclined to fit an organic lifestyle, even if these countries may put more investment into organic food than the United States.
