San Francisco Declares September 16-22 ‘West Coast Green Week’

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - In its continued efforts to advance green building in the Bay Area, the City and County of San Francisco today renewed its public support for the West Coast Green Residential Building Conference and Expo with a Resolution declaring the week of September 16th through 22nd “West Coast Green Week.” In 2006, with the inaugural West Coast Green conference approaching, the Board of Supervisors filed a similar Resolution which declared the last week in September “Green Building Week.”

“The City of San Francisco is honored to host the first major residential green building event on the West Coast. Green building is increasingly recognized as essential to the health of your citizens, businesses and communities,” said Mark Palmer, Green Building Coordinator for the Department of the Environment, City and County of San Francisco. “We look forward to this key event!”

Mayor Gavin Newsom, who will be addressing the audience at the event, will be able watch this year’s event unfold right outside his window. West Coast Green organizers have announced that they will be constructing the first ever mkLotus™, a “zero-energy” prefabricated green modular home, just outside of City Hall in Civic Center Plaza.

The mkLotus™ is the latest and most anticipated design by Michelle Kaufmann, whose past projects include the Sunset Breezehouse™, Glidehouse™, and the mkSolaire™. According to Kaufmann, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to design such a hands-on example of a green home that will help educate people on sustainable, accessible solutions that they can implement in their daily lives for a big impact on energy bills, well-being, and our environment.”

The public is invited to tour the mkLotus™, stroll the tradeshow floor and select from dozens of workshops and presentations about living, building and buying “green” on its 3rd day, known as Homeowner Day, when West Coast Green opens its doors to the general public.
