2007 Weather Conditions Not Necessarily Linked to Climate Change

In this Yahoo! news story, the United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization says that while recent extreme weather across the world is undeniable, it may not be a result of climate change.

The year 2007 has been brutal weather-wise in numerous areas (the article points out several examples), and both land and sea temperatures are increasing, but variable climate conditions like El Nino could also be a reason.

“A study by British Met Office experts released on Thursday found that natural weather variations actually helped offset the effects of global warming the past couple of years, but with temperatures set to rise to new records beginning in 2009.”

The debate amongst scientists over the existence of climate change is nothing new; it’s also on the front cover of this week’s Newsweek. While Earth 911 doesn’t take sides regarding the debate, you can learn more about climate change at our Climate Change page.
