Eco-City Plans Developed in Several Countries
by Earth 911 on July 27th, 2007
E-wire put out this release about how more and more countries are investigating the idea of “eco-cities,” urban areas that save water and energy, produce few carbon emissions and don’t require landfills. The concern comes now that half of the global population lives in cities and towns, which could increase to 2/3 by 2030.
“But replacing aging infrastructure in cities is not only expensive, but also technically challenging. The tantalizing vision of building green cities from scratch has been around for decades - concepts embraced by politicians, urban designers and philosophers alike.”
We’ve already seen the idea of eco-cities in the news when China proposed building one from scratch which would be called Dongtan. Leonardo DiCaprio is planning to rebuild a Kansas Town in this mold for a Discovery Channel series. The idea is nothing new, but once the concept is successfully proven, it could change urban planning forever.
